engine analyzer shows code # XXXXX for my '02 audi TT 1.8L. have no idea what it pertains to. can you help, please?

That is normally a bad, (sticking) thermostat, but it could be the coolant temp sensor. You would want to check the coolant temperature to see if it is getting hot enough.

Note: Always replace seals and gaskets.

Removing

Vehicles with air conditioning:

WARNING! The air conditioning refrigerant circuit must not be opened.
  • Unbolt front engine cover support from intake manifold.
  • Detach retainers for refrigerant hoses.

  • Unbolt A/C compressor, lift clear together with refrigerant hoses (do not disconnect) and tie in place on hood lock.
All vehicles:

  • Disconnect coolant hose from connection -3-.
  • Unscrew bolts -4- and remove connection, O-ring -2- and coolant thermostat

Installing

  • Clean and smooth down sealing surface for O - ring as required.
  • Insert coolant thermostat.
  • Installation position: bowed metal strip on thermostat must be vertical.
  • Moisten new O ring with coolant G 012 AS D.
  • Tighten bolts.
  • Fill up with coolant. See: Service and Repair

Tightening torque
Connection to cylinder block: 15 Nm

Testing coolant thermostat

  • Heat thermostat in water bath.
