Customer Question

hi, i'm thinking of buying audi A4, 2.0 TFSI. i have read about excessive oil consumption of the 2.0L engine. the audi dealership says it's not a problem. What should i realistically expect of the oil consumption? How should i get audi to be responsible for excessive oil consumption if it occurs?

This is a redesigned motor, it is not the same 2.0 from the 2005 to 2008 models. So far I have not seen or heard of any major issues. I have seen only 1 turbo replaced under warranty because it was burning oil. All motors could use oil, more so when new. I would not worry about it and if there is an issue I think Audi will take care of it. Audi has guide lines to measure oil consumption if there is an issue you will have to work with the dealer. I would assume you would make it 10,000miles with out any top off after the motor breaks in.

thank you. your answer is helpful, but i wondered if you can clarify a couple of things you mentioned:

the 1 turbo engine you know of that was replaced under warranty, was it a 2009, or was it 05-08motor?

how long does it take for the motor to "break in", so i can arrange with the dealer that after X kms, if the oil consumption is more than X mL/10,000km, i want them to fix it. would audi tell me their guidelines for measuring oil consumption?

do you know if same problem exists with BMW 3 series? (so maybe i should buy a BMW instead).

many thanks

It was just the turbo NOT the whole engine.
Yes it was replaced under warranty.
2009 model.
Break in is about 2000 kilometers
Refer to the Owners Manual for specific break-in procedures.
Oil consumption standard is 0.5 liters per 1000 km
Under normal conditions, the rate of oil consumption depends on the quality and viscosity of the oil, the RPM at which the engine is operated, the ambient temperature and road conditions. Further factors are the amount of oil dilution from water condensation or fuel residue and the oxidation level of the oil.

This is how we works in the USA it may be different where you are at.

Any and all cars can consume oil. I wouldn't label it as an AUDI 2.0 problem. With that said I would buy the Audi over the BMW but it is all personal taste. Good luck with your new car, what ever it may be.
If you would like any more advice let me know.
