I have a GE profile trash compactor. Just recently when I go

Customer Question

I have a GE profile trash compactor. Just recently when I go to compact it will not work. I can hear the sounds but the compressor does not engage. What would be the issue here?
JA: Can you guesstimate how old your GE is? And just to clarify, what's the exact model?
Customer: 7/07 Model GCG1580LOSS
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes if possible. Just not sure where the problem is/what to fix
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: No. Just need to know what the issue is why it won't compact and what to check for so I can fix it/get the right part

To confirm, the motor starts but the ram will not move?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I hear the sound or buzz of the motor but no movement of ram
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Okay, can you tell if the motor is actually running or buzzing, trying to start?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
it seems to be. Almost feelssounds like the ram is stuck
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

The motor cannot turn if the ram is stuck, so if the motor is running, there has to be an issue with the chain drive. Can you remove the lower cover at the bottom of the compactor for inspection?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I'm not sure the motor is actually running. I hear the buzzing when I turn it to compact so I know it's getting power but I dont actually hear the motor running
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Ah, okay. IN any case, we will need to get to the bottom to see if we can turn the ram back up to get the drawer open.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Ok. So I need to take bottom panel off?
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Got the bottom cover off. Now what?
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Yes, but it is very greasy and messy under there, be sure to lay protective pads down.

Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

See if you can turn the large gear by moving the chain.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Already did
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No. seems to be stick
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Stuck
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Won't turn in either direction?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
It does turn clockwise if I use force on the large gear but can't turn it by pulling on chain
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Now it's going both ways
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Okay, so plug it in and see if it will go now.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Nope. Same thing. Buzzing sound but no movement of ram
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
you're aware it was very hard to move the gear in either direction
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Can you continue to move it by hand to get it to release or loosen up?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I can move it and the ram is moving but it it very hard to do. Not moving easily at all. Should it?
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Yes, it should be fairly easy to turn. See if you can get it fully back at the home position so the drawer will open.

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
I've got the drawer out. It was stuck in open position. It definitely is not easy to turn
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Can you see anything jammed in the edges of the ram?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
No. looks clear.
Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Just took top off and no obstruction that I can see anywhere
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

Hmm, perhaps motor is faulty. If you loosen the motor mount bolts and take the chain off, is the motor easy to turn?

Customer: replied 1 month ago.
Kelly. Thx for ur help but I'm not going to all that trouble. Thought it was an easier fix. Have a great day
Expert:  Kelly replied 1 month ago.

I understand, thank you.
