I have a GE profile trash compactor. Just recently when I go to compact it will not work. I can hear the sounds but the compressor does not engage. What would be the issue here?
JA: Can you guesstimate how old your GE is? And just to clarify, what's the exact model?
Customer: 7/07 Model GCG1580LOSS
JA: Do you plan on doing the work yourself?
Customer: Yes if possible. Just not sure where the problem is/what to fix
JA: Anything else we should know to help you best?
Customer: No. Just need to know what the issue is why it won't compact and what to check for so I can fix it/get the right part

To confirm, the motor starts but the ram will not move?

Okay, can you tell if the motor is actually running or buzzing, trying to start?

The motor cannot turn if the ram is stuck, so if the motor is running, there has to be an issue with the chain drive. Can you remove the lower cover at the bottom of the compactor for inspection?

I'm not sure the motor is actually running. I hear the buzzing when I turn it to compact so I know it's getting power but I dont actually hear the motor running

Yes, but it is very greasy and messy under there, be sure to lay protective pads down.

It does turn clockwise if I use force on the large gear but can't turn it by pulling on chain

Can you continue to move it by hand to get it to release or loosen up?

I can move it and the ram is moving but it it very hard to do. Not moving easily at all. Should it?

Yes, it should be fairly easy to turn. See if you can get it fully back at the home position so the drawer will open.

I've got the drawer out. It was stuck in open position. It definitely is not easy to turn

Can you see anything jammed in the edges of the ram?

Hmm, perhaps motor is faulty. If you loosen the motor mount bolts and take the chain off, is the motor easy to turn?
