My whirlpool washer is stuck in sensing mode and it seems like the water is going straight through and out the drain hose. Is this something I can fix

Is the drain hose as high as the top of the washer and not sealed at the end so air can get to it?

No it is not as high as the washer and the end is going into a gravity drain

That would be the problem, it has to be elevated to prevent siphoning. Once you get the hose higher, it will work as intended. You can make a drain by using 2" PVC pipe from the hardware store and then just run the PVC to the floor drain.
