Customer Question

I have a GE stackable washer/dryer. Out of the blue the dryer quit drying, possibly no heat and the washer won't run without the dryer being on. With that the washer seems to not be working at all. It's like a complete shutdown?!?!

Hello and welcome to Just answer. My name is ***** ***** I will be the one to try and assist you today. Do you happen to have the model number and brand of your washer handy so I can pull up the correct manuals and have a look at them for you?

Give me some time to find the correct manuals and service manuals so we can try to solve this problem together. You will be alerted via email when I have responded back or you can book mark this page to easily get back to me.

I am so sorry that it has taken me a while to get back with you. I was dealing with a family emergency. So back to your problem. In electric dryers, heat is generated by the heating element. The element is a coil of heating wire enclosed in a metal chamber. Electric current flowing through the coil creates heat and the air being pulled through the chamber absorbs this heat. If the element is defective then it will not heat. It can be tested with a multi-meter for continuity. Unplug the dryer and remove the front or rear panel to locate the element so it can be tested.

Hope all is well.So I don't know if you read my original question but the washer is just barely operating also. Agitating in slow motion with no force. And the washer will not operate unless the dryer is on.
Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

Ok so what we are going to try to do with yours is see if you are getting any error codes that way we know what we are looking at.

You have CLEAR THE ERROR CODES.So the machine could Reset. By rotating the washer knob to position 4 and press and hold the START/ PAUSE button. The indicator will flash during this process. Release the start/pause button after 3 seconds. Press and hold the start/pause button and fabric softer button while rotating the knob to position tn 6 to exit diagnostic.

Let me know what codes pop up please.

I tried this yesterday and just tried it again. I'm not getting anything. No blinking lights etc.

When dryer is on allowing washer to operate (agitate slowly) the lid locked light is not on an lid can be lifted. If that helps?
Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

One of the common problem with this unit is the lid switch assembly going bad which can cause these issues to happen.

What I cant figure out is why your machine is not pulling up a code. Have you checked to make sure there is electric running to the unit and the breaker has switched off. I understand it was working before but I just want to make sure its working at the moment to try and figure out the codes.

Sadly this set is known for the lid switch assembly going bad and it can happen often. Sometimes even replacing it doesn't stop it from happening again.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
it's running as we speak.
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Ok I got the lights to blink when going to pos 6.
Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

how many blinks were there?

Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

or did a code pop up?

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
I don't know wher a code would show up. I don't have a digital readout. The lights will blink in pis 6 but only
If the dryer is running.
Customer: replied 3 months ago.
All 5 lights are blinking
Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

ok bare with me one moment while I look this up.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Thanks

Ok so that is a bad switch error code. Lets try this.

Aside from electrical problems, the switch may suffer from a mechanical problem. The lid may have a striker which depresses the switch when the lid is closed. Make sure the striker is functioning and aligned with the hole over the switch. Inspect the switch and make sure the metal strip is not bent out of position (if present). If your switch uses a mercury switch, make sure the mercury envelops the internal contacts when it is in the closed lid position. Your design may differ, so inspect it for proper operation before proceeding to the electrical testing.

There are two primary types of lid switches. One type on which you can directly test the terminals on the switch and another style where you have to test it at the wiring harness. In either case the method for testing the switch is the same. If a wiring harness is used, separate the two pieces of the harness and test the side of the harness that connects to the switch.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
The door latch seems to be in perfect condition and operating freely. Where is the wiring harness?
Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

there are two wires that lead to the lid switch

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
Near as I can see. It's all in tact. What we know:
Dryer has no heat.
Washer won't operate with out the dryer being in and isn't operating well. Can't we deduce anything from these strange but obvious actions?
Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

I am afraid this is a little to far out for me so I am going to open this up to other experts to see if they may have an idea of whats going on. Please do not rate negatively as that will only keep the question locked to me trying to help you.

Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

I notice that nobody has picked up your question and although I am still out of ideas as to what could be going on with your set other than possibly a short in wiring somewhere I was able to locate the manual for your washer so I wanted to send this over to you in case you dont have it and can help.

Customer: replied 3 months ago.
It was a short in the wiring.
Expert:  Webb-Guy replied 3 months ago.

Well then I guess I wasn't crazy with my thinking. I am certainly glad to hear that you were able to get this issue fixed. I just did not want to misdiagnose your problem without being able to see it for myself. I assume everything is in working order now which I am sure you are happy about. If you don't have a copy of your manual for further use that link I sent you, you can download on your computer to keep for future reference as well. Enjoy the rest of your day and thank you for letting me know.
