If I can succeed in getting the oven to preheat to 350 degrees and I put my cake or other baked/roasted item in, the oven apparently stops heating at some point and then does not come back on again. I spend hours trying to get a fully baked or roasted product.

It's usually a faulty igniter. If it doesn't use between 3.2 and 3.6 amps the valve won't open and turn on the gas. It should take less than a minute to ignite when first turned on. here is a link to the part.
