When it stays stuck in the agitation mode how do you advance it past that mode just manually advance the timer knob?

ok so then it has to be a dead spot within the timer contacts not allowing voltage for the timer to automatically advance.

Which means it is a timer issue and you will need to replaced the washer timer.
