Can I get the complete model number of the unit?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.
Good morning Chas. Thank you for your reply. I currently do not have the model number. The fridge is in a rental unit but it is a Whirlpool.

Good morning, how old is the unit we are talking about?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.
I think it at least 4 years old

Is the freezer on top ?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.
I almost think that the defrosted ice wet something on the inside causing the smell.
Expert:  Chas replied 12 months ago.

Is the unit still being used at this time?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.
No, it was unplugged because I was afraid it would start a fire. The smell was so much that it went through the entire apartment & was the strongest when you opened the door to the fridge
Expert:  Chas replied 12 months ago.

How long did you have it unplugged for before turning it back on?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.
At least 27 hours
Expert:  Chas replied 12 months ago.

There is not much inside the unit to burn, a light and a fan motor, How soon did the odor begin after turning it on again?

Customer: replied 12 months ago.
Immediately

I would remove the back cover in the freezer and see if anything is melted in there, normally held in with 2 screws...
