Is the sound coming from inside the freezer or around the back area..?..Go around back see if you can hear the sound..IF the sound is coming from inside the freezer ..This means you have a faulty fan motor..Or ice build up against the fan blade of the fan itself..Since you unplugged it you may have fixed it as the ice has melted away from the fan blade..If not then you will need to replace the fan motor.
