It has a leak at the drain valve. We see no need for this pressure release valve (little soft rubber pointy gasket) and are thinking of sealing it off with 2-part epoxy. Will we cause a greater problem if we do this?
Hi XXXXX will help you with the leak problem .
You said you have a leak at the drain valve , is it the water pump your talking about , let me know please .
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

yes. That is the part.

Ok, if the epoxy does seal the leak it wont cause further problems down the road .
if you require more assistance let me know please .

So far I am a happy face. One last question, what is the purpose of the pressure release valve. Seems like a liability to me.

That breather hole is to stop the leak from going down to the bearing at the pulley .
The Epoxy will stop the leak but you will have to eventually replace the water pump.
Customer: replied 3 years ago.

so how do I replace the water pump? I live in a place where is is hard to get an appliance repair person to a remote location and I work. My son is willing to do the job if we can locate the part. Is this something he can do? .
Open this link to Repair clinic they will ship one out to you .
Tip the washer back till you see three screws holding the pump to the base of the washer then remove the two hoses , its the easiest pump to replace .
