My kitchenaid Artisan is leaking oil near where the beater blade connects. Is this something that I could repair myself? I have made some home applicane repairs before.

This is not an unusual issue.

The grease in the gearcase head of the mixer will start to soften ofer time and with heat and may leak some .

The beater shaft seal is not a liquid tight seal .it is only to keep dust and flour out of the greacase.

The grease is a food grade grease it will not harm a person .

OK the grease will not harm me, but is this normal? Do I need to worry that the mixer is on its way out?

No there is over 8 0z of grease in the gearcase if it was to all leak out you would have it all over the counter, just a little streak down the beater will not harm it at all

It has been leaking for almost a year now, so nothing to worry about other than cleaning off the grease every time just before use?

yes that will do it and try to store it in a cool location .
