why won't my ge gas oven come to temperature and stay constant?

turning on preheat (indicates temp), using an oven thermometer to check temp, temp is off by 50 degrees and then fluctuates.

Ok from what you have said the problem would be the oven temp sensor. It is located inside the oven. It is a metal rod sticking out of the inside wall in the upper back corner.
It is just screwed on. The part # XXXXX XXXXX You can get the part from your local appliance parts store.
