Customer Question

I have the GE profile side by side PSS26SGPA SS. The digital temperature control top right hand side of the refrigerator when the door. The adjustment is simple enough push the button to desire temperature. My unit regardless seems to continue to drop to 32 degrees and lower. I have unplugged it several times waited several hours and continues to happen. Recommended temp is 37 degrees but the temperature continues to remain freezing despite setting temperature and closing the door.

Optional Information:
Brand: GE
Type of Appliance: Refrigerator

Already Tried:
Unplugged unit several times waited several hours. Removed ice bin. set temperature many times to 38 degrees will not maintain temperature.

Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today.

So just to be clear---you ARE actually setting the temperature to 38 degrees. The Refrigerator just reverts back to the ACTUAL temperature which is why it shows 32 degrees. ok so there is a common problem associated with this problem on your model. In the upper back left corner of your refrigerator is a damper assembly. This assembly has the refrigerator thermistor (thermostat) and a flap that shuts off the cold air from the freezer going into the refrigerator. The hinges on this flap commonly break and then the flap gets stuck open and can't stop the air from flowing into your refrigerator. You'll want to replace this damper assembly to fix your problems. Below is a link to the part you'll want to order.

Thank you for fast response. Ok when I am looking at the refrigerator the door to the left is the freezer. The right refrigerator. Are we talking about the back left of the refrigerator. I see what looks like a cover When I open the freezer there is an opening to the top right back of the freezer. I would expect this is were the cold air from the freezer goes into the refrigerator. so, am I looking at the correct location? and removal procedure for the damper

You can see what the part looks like if you just click on the link I gave you. Below is a link to the part again. I believe you're looking at the correct part--It is in the refrigerator section on the left against the back wall.

There isn't really a procedure written out for this repair, but you'll need to remove the light cover on the ceiling. Then remove the screws above the light cover holding part 456 in the link below in place.

Then remove the shelves and there is a vent panel against the back wall under the the part you're replacing. This part just unclips and pulls straight down. That will expose 2 screws holding the bottom of the damper assembly you need to remove. Remove the 2 screws at the bottom of this part and the 2 going up into the ceiling---then the part just pulls off and disconnects. Be sure to unplug the unit before you service it.
