What do you mean exactly by "What causes the ice maker to come on by itself?"?

Are you saying that the icemaker isn't cycling automatically?

Yes, I would depress the ice release lever and release it, then the cycle would stop. In minute or two it would start again by itself. I would depress the ice release lever again and it would stop.

so the icemaker has a timer built into the icemaker itself that should prevent the icemaker from cycling any faster than 1 time every 7.5 minutes. If it's cycling faster than that, something is just wrong with the timer inside the icemaker and the icemaker itself will need to be ordered and replaced. The icemaker always should get 120 volts going to it, and the the icemaker is a self contained unit that should function on it's own independently of any other function on the Refrigerator. So if it's cycling when it shouldn't be---the icemaker is the problem.
