Frost keeps building up on the sides of the ice bin in my sub zero freezer. What gives?
Optional Information: Brand: Sub Zero Type of Appliance: Freezer Already Tried: Lowering temp of freezer
Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today.Where exactly is the frost build up? Can you take a picture of the frost build up and use the insert/edit image button so that you can attach the picture and I can see it?
Sure. Here's the side. It usually only happens on the left, for whatever reason.
OK perfect, and could you take a picture a bit further away? Because right now it kind of just looks like a piece of sheet metal with frost build up on it so I can't exactly see what's going on.
Sure. Here are two more pictures. I have a Sub Zero 700 TC, by the way. Thanks
OK perfect, thank you. Does this refrigerator have an ice dispenser on the front of the door? And if so, is there any ice build up inside the chute on the door?
No, the ice dispenser is just inside the bottom drawer of the freezer.
ok so it looks like the freezer is just warming up a bit too much when it goes into defrost and slightly melting the ice causing it to create humidity on the side of the ice bucket. Now this is completely normal if it takes a month or two to form that much frost/ice build up because the ice bucket should be dumped every few months and cleaned. But if it's building up in a shorter amount of time, you may need to replace your defrost termination switch because it's letting the defrost cycle run for a bit too long.
It usually builds up that much within a month. Is that too soon?
I wouldn't say that's really too soon. It's borderline either way. But there are other factors such as how often the door is opened and how much food you have in the unit, how much ice you use, etc.. that play a factor in how quickly it builds up as well. You could always try to replace the defrost termination switch but there may be really nothing wrong with the refrigerator either if it takes a month to build up only that much frost.
