Customer Question

How do I reset/unlock my GE side by side refrigerator ice maker? It's a 2005 model, and does NOT have a LOCK button on the door. It only has water/crushed/cubes and a light switch.

The auger doesn't turn...still makes ice. I can turn off the ice maker and turn the bracket that turns the auger clockwise myself, but when ice maker is turned on, I don't hear a click or hear the bracket turn...it's completely silent leading me to believe it's locked.

I've had workers in my kitchen and they've turned the light switch on on the door....it seems to have stopped working after that. Could they have locked it?

thanks!

Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today.

Are you still getting water out the water dispenser?

Customer replied 329 days and 19 hours ago.

THe water in the door hasn't been working for quite a while. I have had luck getting it to work when I defrosted the water line with a blow dryer. the ice maker was making ice even when the water in the door wasn't working.

But, I'm just worried about the ice. It was working until the workers arrived!

ok, so it sounds like you have a bad door as well. I know you're not concerned about the water but lets talk about that first. Because if the water is working then the control panel can't possibly be locked. If the control panel is locked you won't get a dispenser light, you can't change the indicator lights around, and the water dispenser won't work. On this particular Refrigerator, the most common issue is that the water line inside the door freezes. Remove the kick panel below the refrigerator and freezer doors and look for the water line disconnect just behind the front panel near the freezer door hinge. Disconnect the water line and shut the door. Press the water dispenser and see if water comes out of the water line at the bottom where you'd disconnected the water line. If water comes out, you'll need to just turn the refrigerator off and leave the door open for about 45 minutes and that will allow the door to heat up enough that when you connect the water line to the door again, it should start to dispense water again. Using a hair dryer to warm up the door is also very useful.

There is a kit designed to add a heater to the dispenser so this does not happen in the future if the problem comes back. Below is a link to the kit and it comes with instructions on how to install it.

As for the ice not dispensing, either you have a bad auger motor, or the switch inside the dispenser that the paddle pushes on is bad. Since there is only 1 paddle, if the water is working--the switch wouldn't be bad and you'd need a new auger motor. That's another reason to determine if the water is working or not.

So, if my light is working in the door, it can't be locked?

that is correct yes.

How much (on average) should a new auger motor run? want to make sure I don't get taken advantage of.

About $60-65. The part number for the auger motor is WR60X10258.
