Customer Question

I have a Whirlpool Gold side-by-side refrigerator. The frame around the freezer door is so hot most of the time I can't put my hands on it. It seems to be cooling fine but runs most of the time. Is the defrost timer sticking?

Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today.

The defrost timer wouldn't cause this problem. There is a yoder loop that runs up through the frame around the freezer door and the refrigerator. It's the high side of the compressor and it is placed there to keep the frame "slightly warm" to make sure the door seals don't freeze to the frame of the freezer. If it's getting too hot, you'll need to pull the refrigerator forward and remove the lower back access panel. There is a condenser fan motor next to the freezer. Make sure it's running and if it's not, remove the blockage or replace the condenser fan motor. If the fan is running, clean the coils under the refrigerator so they can cool better. And if the frame is still hot, then that means your compressor is just starting to go out because it's working too hard and should be cooling correctly if the fan is running and the coils are clean.
