Customer Question

My fridge side by side freezer keeps building up ice and frost and the "over temperature reset" has to be pushed to stop the alarm. Can you Advise? I had a Kitchen aide tech come out in 2011 and he charged me over $200. to get the ice out but did not solve the problem.

Optional Information:
Brand: Kitchenaide
Type of Appliance: Refrigerator

Already Tried:
Opening the freezer door and turning up the freezer temperature to melt the ice. Have done this 4 times.

Hi my name isXXXXX will be assisting you with this problem. Please allow me some time to do research and type a response to each of your posts.

The problem here is the defrost system has failed, Open the door of the freezer, remove the lower panel in the rear, Once the panel is off you will see the evaporator (looks like the radiator on a car) thaw the ice that will be covering the evaporator with a hair dryer. Looped under the evaporator you will see the defrost heater. Test this with a ohm meter, if it reads open then it's bad and will need to be replaced.

If the heater reads good (continuity) then the defrost thermostat/sensor located clipped to the top of the evaporator is bad, This will need to be replaced.

Please remember after accepting you can come back at any time for additional assistance if needed.

Thanks

Mike
