Washing machine makes loud grinding noise during the rinse/spin

Resolved Question:

Washing machine makes loud grinding noise during the rinse/spin cycle. The noise varies/comes and goes. It seems loudest when starting off (to spin) and tapers off when at full speed however, this varies also and is not always the case. This defect has only begun recently.

Hello, and thank you for using this service. I'll be helping you with your problem today.

Generally this means that your drain pump bearing is starting to go out, or the thrust bearing on the main transmission pulley is going out. It's easy to figure out which part has failed so just unplug the washer and tip it backwards so that you can remove the belt from the pulleys below the washer. Next, spin the pulleys by hand both directions to see which one is making noise. If the one on the far right is making the noise, you'll need to order and replace the drain pump to fix the issue. If the large middle pulley is the one making the noise, you'll need to replace the thrust bearing.
