Hi my name isXXXXX will try and help you with your issue.
Is there frost on the coils inside the freezer and could you tell if the fan was running?
yes their is frost in the back inside of the freezer and fan is runnning
Ok if there is frost buildup then the unit is not defrosting and the airflow would be blocked. Did you remove the rear panel?
yes we removed the rear exterieur bottom panel
Ok on this particular unit a high majority of the time the defrost issue is due to a faulty defrost thermostat. Do you happen to have a volt ohm meter?
No we don't
Sometimes you can visually see a bulge in the defrost stat also when it goes bad.
what is a defrost stat,,sorry
The defrost thermostat is located on the top of the coil on the right hand side mounted to the coil.
no bulge visual
Ok give me a minute let me look up the tech sheet we can do some tests through the control. I will be right back.
should we use a blow dryer to get rid of the frost in the freezer
Just a minute before you do that i will have you do some other things first ok, but eventually to get it operating it can be thawed using a hair dryer
Ok we are going to try and put it into a service test mode follow these instructions carefully
Open one of the top refrigerator door the one on the right
we only have one door
ok open the one door and hold the light switch closed
then press the refrigerator + or up temperature button 3 times and then release the switch
it stayed at 5
it says E
it should be s and e
press the refrigerator up or + one more time
holding thje switch again
okay it went back to 5
Both are back at 5?
it did not touch the freezer..shouls have I?
do you want us to do both at the same time?
No leave the freezer control alone
i only have one control for the fridge....
do you want it to be at E?
Double check your model number
You should have a control box like this
there should be 2 temp displays
one for the freezer and one for the refrigerator
Ok lets try this again open the door and hold the door switch in the closed position there should be no lights on press the refrigerator + or temp up key 3 times and then release the door switch and tell me what comes up on the display don't press any other buttons ok
it is an E
Ok press the refriger + key one more time
do we shut the door switch also...our freezer control went to 5 or S..is that normal
yes leave it open ok good looks like we are in the test mode
there should have been an s or a 5 in freezer and an e in the refrigerator
did you press the + one more time?
ok press it one more time
holding the switch closed or not
just press the button
freezer 1 and fridge blank
and no fan
Ok good no press the refrigerator + button once again just the button ok you should get either an S or a 0
ok the defrost thermostat is good now you can defrost the coil using your hair dryer leave the refrigerator door open so it remains in defrost but the actual control is bad, to repair the unit the jazz board/control needs to be replaced.
PART NUMBER: 12868513 this is the part number for the control it is mounted in the control box.
Once you have it completely defrosted close the refrigerator door and the unit will cancel the test/diagnostic mode and start cooling again
we started defrosting the coils and the fridge is back at 5 and the freezer at 4..si that normal
but we are not finished yet
Ok the test cancelled out
do we continue
enter the test/diagnostic mode again or turn it off to defrost it
you don't want it running while you are defrosting it with a hair dryer
okay we are at 1 and blank again
ok press the + one more time
an s should come up
okay we defrosted the coils..shut the freezer..now what do we do
it's completely defrosted all ready?
are you sure there is no ice on the coil?
from top to bottom?
yup we see the coils behind the slots
is it still showing an S?
yes only the coils we forsted..yes still an S..do we shut the fridge
Ok keep going until it changes to O the coil still is plugged with ice until that S changes to O
There is a lot of the coil you can't see that is stioll plugged
ok will do
ok thank you
it came back to 4 and 5..it put it back in test mode..correct?
Yes put it back into test mode
we are still melting the coils
mean defrosting of course
yes it could take a while sometimes 90 minutes to fully clear the ice
we are at 0
Ok it should be defrosted all the way then close the door switch or close the door and it should start running again and you should have airflow into the refrigerator section now
The unit is not defrosting on it's own and the control needs to be replaced to completely repair the unit
who do we call to have this fixed?
PART NUMBER: 12868513 this is the part number for the control and is located inside the control box, the entire control box can be removed to replace the part.
where do we get the part?
Sears service can fix these most techs will have this on there trucks
sears parts has them in stock
or type in appliance parts to bring up your local listings
appliance zone, appliance parts pros are a few others
Defrosting it manually will give you about 5 days of good cooling before it plugs up again
Anything else that I can help you with?
should we see a difference in a couple of hours
About 3 hours I would think can you feel any air coming out the vent inside the refrigerator at the top rear?
thanks very much for your help
