whirlpool cabrio gas dryer: dryer will start the cycle, sense the dampness, but the gas burner never lights. what's going on with this thing???

It sounds like you may have a bad high limit thermal cut out. Pull the dryer forward and remove the screws going into the back panel. The back panel will pull off and in the back left corner there is a heater vent with 2 thermostats on the side. Use a multimeter and unplug the dryer. Check continuity through each thermostat and if one is open, you need to replace it.

the igniter is not even trying to ignite, and there is no gas being released... do you still think it's the high limit thermal cut out?

yes. The point is that the igniter is getting power cut to it or it's just bad. Usually one of these two thermostats is the part that cuts power to the igniter.
