Our Kenmore washer make a loud clang when stating from a dead stop. There is soft grinding noise after the clang, no more than one second.

Chas: Yes, the machine does make a loud clang at the end of spin. I listened carefully myself. I avoid getting too close to doing the laundry here.

Then you have a bad spin tube on the unit causing the problem, you will need to replace this, the part cost about $100 and will require that the complete gearcase be removed and the inner tub also to install this..
