AnthonysTV&Appliance :

Does this use a GLOW igniter?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

just becuase they glow does not mean they are good

Customer:

yes it does and it gets bright

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

They have to draw enough current to open the gas vavle they dont do that when they get old

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

they still light and look ok

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

does not mean they are good

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

replace the igniter

Customer:

we've only had this dryer for about 4 years

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

then the age is right for replacment

Customer:

one sec...this is his wife typing..he is checking something

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

ok

Customer:

he says the ignitor gets REALLY bright

Customer:

and when we turn it on..it starts making a humming noise like I've never heard before after it has ran for a few minutes

Customer:

you open it and no heat

Customer:

can you tell us how to replace the ignitor...if that may need what needs to be done?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

You cant test an igniter by looking at it

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

do you have an AMP Meter?

Customer:

yes

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

you need to measure the current the igniter draws\

Customer:

ok

Customer:

where do you test this?

Customer:

He doesn't have the whole thing apart.

Customer:

He's walking to the shop to get it.

Customer:

anthony, where do you test this?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

depends on your meter

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

if it is clamp on

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

clamp it on the wire to the igniter

Customer:

no not a clamp on

Customer:

it's got probes

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

if it a lead you have to open the circuit

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

and put it in series with the igniter

Customer:

explain please

Customer:

take one wire off and put it thru the amp meter to the ignitor?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

Current can only be measured by being part of the circuit

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

yes

Customer:

ok one sec

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

unless it s a clamp on meter then it is easy

Customer:

he's going to check it

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

set the meter to 10A scale

Customer:

ok

Customer:

so how are you?

Customer:

We are hot here in Texas.

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

We are WET here in NY

Customer:

Oh wow!

Customer:

ya'll just had that hurricane

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

The Igniter should draw 3 AMPS

Customer:

ok I will tell him

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

Yes

Customer:

He says he only has a extech to check this with, does he put it on MA AC/DC?

Customer:

still here?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

AC

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

Does the meter have an A scale?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

MA is too small

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

wont do it

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

will blow the fuse in the meter

Customer:

ok

Customer:

he is reading

Customer:

so meanwhile...did ya'll get bad flood from the hurricane?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

not me personally but all around

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

many roads closed

Customer:

we dealth with several hurricanes, Rita and Ike were horrible!

Customer:

Lot's of damage!

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

state thruway closed

Customer:

he says he has a multi meter

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

yes but does it have a 10A scale?

Customer:

and the only thing he can see has hurtz and multi meter

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

what is the make and model of the meter?

Customer:

extech mod dm110

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

That meter supports 1/2 A

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

it wont do the test

Customer:

ok

Customer:

can we get one that we need and get back with you on this problem?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

Replace the igniter if that does not fix it replace the gas vavle

Customer:

By chance, do you think it is the board?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

if you want to get a meter that will do the test

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

thats finer

Customer:

that would probably be expensive

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

no

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

the board tells the igniter to glow

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

thats happened

Customer:

how much do you think it costs to replace the ignitor?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

the igniter tells the gas valve to open

Customer:

money is tight here.

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

the igniters go about 80-90 at your local appliance parts store

Customer:

wowee.

Customer:

ok

Customer:

OK troy says he's going to get a meter and we will get back with you

Customer:

before we go out and start buying something

Customer:

thanks for your help

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

ok get an AC CLAMP ON

Customer:

and ya'll take care.

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

and that will make it easy

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

no wires to cut

Customer:

ok, he will probably send me to lowes tomorrow? LOL and I will be all lost looking for this thingie.

Customer:

ok

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

they do have it

Customer:

ok I can get back in touch with you thru my email?

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

yes

Customer:

Customer:

Customer:

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

Customer:

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

,

Customer:

Ok we have a meter to check the wire

Customer:

We got an amp meter, put it on the blue wire and when the ignitor came on, we drew 3 1/2 amps. The heat comes on when we first turn it on, but then stops working after a few seconds. I'll get back on line later and hopefully you will be on line.

Customer:

ok, we needed your help tonight and you are not available. Thought you would be on line tonight to help us. I need my dryer working. Thanks for your help. But we will call out a technician I guess. Thanks anyway.

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

3.5 amps is good change the gas valve that should be enough to open it

Customer:

Hey Anthony, I went and got the gas valves this morning at the parts store and Troy just changed it out...and got the dryer put back together. Seems to be heating like it should by just feeling it. I washed a load of towels and just put them in to see if it's going to get them dry. I will be back in touch with you shortly. Thanks for your help.

Customer:

Ok, it is working again. Thanks for your help. I will accept now.

Customer:

oh I am suppose to let you respond.

Customer:

I'll wait to hear back from you.

AnthonysTV&Appliance :

I am glad we got it fixed it pays to have the right test equipment !
