My washer is making a grinding sound about a third of the way through the cycle. What do I do?

Is it making the noise all the time now? Do you have a model number? It should be located on a sticker just behind the control panel on the left side.

It does not make the noise until about 3 or 5 minutes into the cycle.

ok this generally is your drain pump that is going out. Tip the washer backwards and remove the belt under the bottom of the washer. Turn all the pulleys by hand both direction and whichever one doesn't spin completely smooth is the part that needs to be replaced. The pulley on the far right is your drain pump pulley and that is going to be the most likely part that needs to be replaced. Below is a link to the part.
