Our dryer turns on by closing the door, if the dial is set

This answer was rated:

Our dryer turns on by closing the door, if the dial is set to a dry cycle (e.g. AutoDry). We just replaced the motor. The door switch seems to be working properly, as is the Start switch. We did replace the timer a few years ago, but that didn't help either.

S.E.Thomas :

hello, welcome to just answer. my name is XXXXX XXXXX and i will be happy to assist you with your problem. this is almost always the start switch. do you have a volt meter?

Customer :

Yes.

S.E.Thomas :

have you removed the wires from the start switch and tested continuity on the switch?

Customer :

I'm not sure if I tested it with the wires removed. Should I go do that now?

S.E.Thomas :

yes. anytime you are testing continuity, always remove the wires as you can read feed back coming from something else. you should not have continuity till the switch is pushed and held. When it is released you should lose continuity.

Customer :

OK. Will do. BRB.

S.E.Thomas :

ok i will be here

Customer :

The start switch is closed all the time. I got a low resistance reading when I tested it with the wires removed.

S.E.Thomas :

that is your problem. if the contacts are closed all the time then it is the same as you holding the button in. you just need to replace the switch. this part can be found at www.appliancepartspros.com at a discounted price.

Customer :

OK. Thanks. XXXXX use the search term "start switch"?
