I have a 10 year old Maytag washing machine model # XXXXX Serial # XXXXX last week I noticed the water pump was sluggish and making a little bit of noise but functioning, last night my wife went to use it and it filled up and I beleive when it went into agitate mode she smelled burning and the machine would not function. emptied the water and fliped it over and observed the belt stretched and the plastic pully to the motor appeared melted. I removed the pully and observed that the motor was running properly, not making any unusual noise. Question is can the pully be replaced and why did it melt, is there a possible problem with the clutch on the agitator?

S.E.Thomas :

the pulley comes with the motor and can not be purchased separately. the first thing you want to check is the pump. rotate the pump pulley by hand and make sure it is free. if it is dragging then this is most likely the problem. these washers were known for pump problems. let me know how the pump feels.

JACUSTOMER-o3wk5mv1- :

The pump pulley spins, it seems to be okay, the larger center pulley also spins, the fact that they put a plastic pulley on the motor and it can't be replaced is crimminal, now I see why alot of people are disgusted with Maytag products, the fact that it's 10 years old is it worth trying to fix it, what does a new motor costs.

HI what happens is when the belt stretches it starts to allow the motor pulley to slip and then gets hot. Maytag discontinued the part and I searched every parts depot I could think of to find one. The motor is at http://www.repairclinic.com/ thanks

Thanks Russ, I realize the burning melting residue is from the belt, not the pulley, i suspect all i will need is a new belt. I will clean off the pulley as much as possible, do you think I will need a new pulley(motor), the pulley is actually still in tact.
IF you can get the pulley clean and looking good, heck yes replace just the belt. without seeing it is hard to determine, but I have seen what you describe and a good cleaning works out just fine. thanks and good work!!
