how much frost was in the freezer when you needed to defrost it? is this self defrosting? how old is this ?
Customer: replied 6 years ago.

Fridge/freezer is about 3 years old.

The fridge is self defrosting.

The ice tray of the freezer was completely solid with ice. Took hours to defrost.

ok you have a defrost problem, you will need to remove the back panel in the freezer section and completely defrost all the coils, the most common reason for this issue is the defrost thermostat, Part 2946or the defrost timer. Part 2717the defrost timer is usually in the back near the compressor and the thermostat is clipped to the coils behind the panel in the freezer, you can order either part @ http://www.repairclinic.com/Whirlpool-Freezer-Parts?s=t-+509444007814-%3d%3db5a3e thanks Bryan
