Hi thanks for the question.

Yes it can be the timer if you turned the timer and the heat came on.Look at the back of the timer for the part number I will see if they have it in stock.

Customer: replied 7 years ago.

how do I get access to the timer?

Could it also be one of the conductors as I think it started working again when I slapped the side of the heating element canister?

Expert:  John replied 7 years ago.
Yes that could be as well .Cut the power and check all the connections one could be loose.
Customer: replied 7 years ago.

I'm just finishing drying a towell.

When I open the door the dryer stops but the heating element seems to stay on

I may have a faint odor of warm burning rubber

Expert:  John replied 7 years ago.
Then the element is grounded to the the heater housing.Thats why its still on when the dryer is turned off.
Customer: replied 7 years ago.

The dryer wasn't turned off.

I just opened the door and I think the element was still on

Expert:  John replied 7 years ago.
You opened the door did the dryer stop when you opened the door.If it did stop and the heat stayed on the element is grounded .Cut the power and take the element out and look at the coils you should see where its touching the housing.
