just moved into a new home with a built in whirlpool oven/microwave. We ran the oven through the self cleaning cycle. The oven shows that the lock is turned off, but the lever is still keeping the door from opening. We can manually release the lever from the top, but it locks every time the door is closed. Model No GMC305PD.
It sounds like your latch has been damaged. If you push the rod in to the right of the latch, does it spring back out and move the latch lever to the left?

The lever closes when you push the rod in. It does not spring open upon release.
The latch has a spring that pushes the rod back out to release the latch. If the latch assembly has warped from the heat of a self-clean cycle, you have to replace the latch assembly

Is this a simple repair with parts available online or is a technician required?
Can you give me the complete model number, there are several numbers/letters after GMC305PD?
Customer: replied 7 years ago.
It is not hard to change, you need to remove the 4 screws holding on the vent cover, then there are 2 screws holding the latch to the oven on the top edges of the latch assembly. Then you can just swap the wires onto the new part. Here is the link to the part #10 on the diagram. p;brandId=1198&modelName=ELECTRIC-OVEN-M/W-COMBO&diagramPageId=00004&componentDescription=LATCH&documentId=O2029959&blt=06
