I have a Maytag microwave model MMV5186AA/MMV5186AC purchased in 2003. It is making a loud humming noise when turned on but not heating. There are no problems with the control panel noted.
Make: MaytagModel: MMV5186AAS Already Tried: No obvious defect. Just the loud hum and not heating.
It is likely the magnatron, it only has a 5-year part warranty, the replacement of this will be well over $200. You can be an simmilar unit starting around $300. It may not be worth the repair. I'm sorry I can not talk you through this. There is a capacitor that holds a charge and can shock you. Please do not go into the unit!
Would the $200 be parts and labor? Do you know how much just the part would run?
The part# XXXXX it is about $80 the reset would be service call and labor. Some shops may give a discounted service call if you bring the unit to them.
There is a round panel inside the microwave ceiling. Is the the access hole to replace the magnatron? If so, how do I remove the panel? I have a background in industrial maintenance. I know to unplug the unit and short out the capacitor to avoid shock.
You have to remove the unit. Remove the outside of the unit. discharge the capacitor, check for burns on the wires and connections, it is the two heaviest wires running to it. May have even burned the top of it.
How do I remove it from the wall? The unit is located above the stove and was installed with the house. How to I access the mounting screws?
If you go to the cabnet above unplug the unit, there will be 2-3 screws in the floor. As you back these out you will have to support the unit until the screws are removed. Then you let it tip down about 6-10" and unhook it from the back. Install instruction link below
