My Whirlpool side by side door refrigerator is not cooling properly. I have cleaned the condenser coils of most of the dirt and dust but I think the problem is the compressor because it is not running. I heard it hum periodically but it stopped after only a couple of seconds. The fan is working though. Do I need to replace the compressor? Is this something I can do or do I need to call a professional?

Hi, how old is the unit?
5 years.
You will want to check the warranty in the back of your owners manual, some compressors have extended warranties. This is not a do-it-yourself job. You have to be certified to replace a compressor, not to mention you would need a torch, gages and vacuum pump. The only other thing it can be is the overload and relay/start device, they plug onto the compressor. The overload and relay are very easy to change.

So you agree that it is the compressor that is the problem? It is supposed to run more than 2 seconds at a time, right? How do I change the overload and relay device? Do I need to get a new part?
It is most likely the compressor. Yes you would need new parts if you wanted to try the overload and relay. The overload and relay plug into the compressor. All you have to do is pull the old overload and relay off and swap the wires to the new ones. Make sure you check the warranty first. And yes the compressor should not do what it is doing.
Thank you. I will accept after I have found the warranty and made sure I have no more questions. You have been great.
You are welcome. Thank You for choosing Just Answer.
Can you tell me what I expect to pay to replace the compressor and/or overload and relay device? How much for each parts?
Off the top of my head. Compressor $150-$200, labor $200.00 R-134a $50-$60. Overload and relay $50.00-$70.00.
Thank you very much. I had a repair guy come in already and replaced the overload and relay. $300.00! If my food wasn't melting, I would have tried to fix it myself with the help from you. Thanks again for a great service!
