My Kenmore Side by Side Freezer Refrigerator, model 596.57016600 keeps freezing up in the refrigerator, even when the Fridge number is XXXXX at 1 or 2 (and the Freezer number is XXXXX at 3). It happens periodically and episodically ever since the 1 year warrantee expired. When it freezes, the water filter freezes and must be removed and thawed. Also various liquids and vegetables in the fridge become frozen. I followed all of the advice in the User Manual and still get the same results. I moved a rarely used Coffee maker away from the fridge. I cleaned the bottom front grill. I told my totally random teenager in no uncertain terms never to change the cold setting, but if he does, never to change it by more than one digit per day. Since he likes to fiddle with the chiller controls, I took them apart and blocked both Chiller control air ports. I cannot re-locate the fridge. There is a wall on the right and back (I can vary the back clearance by pulling it out slightly). On the left is a standard height counter, overhead is a shallow cabinet with about 3 inches of clearance. The rest of the top of the unit is stacked with various items. Your thoughts?

reach in to the left rear of the fridge and tell me if the air is coming though stong
Assume stong means strong. I am not in the same location as the fridge, however, as I recall, sometimes it is coming through the top left corner vent and sometimes not. The air through that vent can be very cold. How strong is the air flow? When it is flowing it could flutter a piece of standard bond paper, but I could easily block it with the same piece of paper and my hand. But then, I was a football lineman so strong is relative to my point of view.
I have tried to keep things away from in front of that vent.
hahaha ,,, you answer my question just fine ,,,you need to replace the air damper ,, part number 67006249 and cost $40.76 and its located there in the top left corner behind the cover ,,, its #7 in this picture / thanks
Why the air damper?
So I would expect the air damper to cause a consistent problem. Always open or always shut. My problem is periodic, once a week, and usually lasts for about 12 hours. Then it appears to go back to normal for a while.
I also assume that if I fix the Damper then I can remove the plugs in the chiller controls?
this air damper is open and closed by power and it has a motor to control it and not just by turning a knob and when the motor sticks it can stick open and get too cold or stick closed and get too warm
