Top Freezer Refrigerator, Model # XXXXXRefrigerator section loses cooling ability; frost-free function not working.Must defrost fridge every 4 to 6 months by removing inside back of freezer and melt ice buildup around condenser coils using a blow dryer.
Make: MaytagModel: MTB2155BR Already Tried: Frost-free function nor working. Every 4 to 6 months I must 'defrost' by removing inside back of freezer and melt ice buildup around the lower section of condenser coils and radiating fins. Reassemble and works fine for another 4 to 6 months. Third occurrence.
This problem is most likely a bad defrost thermostat that is located on the coils of the freezer, this is part number 61002992, You can order the parts you need from the following places, www.apwagner.com, www.repairclinic.com, or www.partstore.com, all of these places offer easy returns and reasonable prices for thier items. Thanks Chas, great job!Your helpful information got me on track. I found the defrost thermostat on the freezer coil where you suggested; I disconnected and took it to a parts store to purchase a new defrost thermostat (thanks for supplying the correct part number, there was some confusion which thermostat until I gave him your number). The tech told me it could be 1 of 3 issues, the thermostat (as you suggested), the heating coil, or the defrosting timer. He instructed me how to bypass the thermostat and reset the timer to defrost. The heating coil lit up. When the timer restarted to cooling mode, the coil shut off. I then hooked up the thermostat and reset the timer to defrost, and the coil failed to heat. Therefore your troubleshooting was correct. A new thermostat is on order (not in stock as it's a 12-year old fridge) and due in a couple of days.I can't find the GREEN ACCEPT button, either I already pushed it, or it's not available to me because I put you on hold pending successful results.Consider this reply as my GREEN ACCEPT. Thanks again.Customerbr />
The green accept button should be visible now to you..Chas
Chas,The system has informed me that I've ACCEPTED your answer. I spent 6 hours following up on your recommendation, which was confirmed by a tech at the parts store where I ordered the thermostat (I will install the thermostat when it arrives). We both did great work, as confirmed by my wife when she discovered her homemade soups, chillis, etc. are now safe in the freezer of our second fridge, and my beer is cold again! If I wasn't retired and on a limited budget, I would have a) junked the 12 year-old 'second' fridge and bought a new one, or b) hired a tech at $80/hour to fix it (and we both know he would have replaced ALL 3 parts, the thermostat, the timer AND the defrost coil!)With your advice, I fixed it myself 'at cost' because my wife and I enjoy the benefits of a second fridge. Thanks for your help, and keep on 'troubleshooting!'Customer
I have noticed you have paid, thank you... Have a nice day..Chas
