We have a Sub Zero with the freezer on the bottom. It is 12 years old and is only cool at highest setting. I have cleaned the fan screen so it is getting good air flow.Is this a Freon cooler and can be recharged? Or is there something else I can do?
Make: sub zeroModel: cant find Already Tried: cleaning the fan screen and checking for air leaks
hi,is this a freezer on the bottom or sxs? usually the model# XXXXX XXXXX the door frame, open the door and look at the hinge side door jam
Yes the freezer is on the bottom not along the side. I am at the office. My wife says that she can not find a model number on the fridge door but is looking for papers.
is it the fridge thats not cooling? if so is there any ice balls on the rear panel.if the freezer is not cooling is there any frost on the ceiling?
The freezer is fine and has been fixed less than a year ago. There is no frost on the ceiling of the freezer. My wife found the model number. it is 550LH ther is also two other numbers 199780 (NNN) NNN-NNNN Time flies because the purchase year was sreally 1995, so it is 14 years old.
so the fridge isnt cooling? any ice buildup in the back panel of the fridge section? the 2 switches on the ceiling of the fridge when you open the door, one is for the lite the other is for the fan,do you hear a fan running when switch is pushed?
There is no ice buildup anywhere we can see. The fan is on when you open the door and hold down the switch. Again, only the fridge seems to be not cooling. We have it turned all the way up, which helped, but not enough.
i realize that the fridge isnt cooling ,subzero has 2 compressors they are like 2 fridges joined together, the freezer has nothing to do with the fridge not cooling,if the fan is running and the condenser fan up top is drawing cool air in cooling things down then you are going to have a sealed system problem, compressor inefficient or more likely a leak in the fridge evaporator, you can remove the back cover from the fridge and check the frost pattern on the coil if its only partially frosted ..it will require a new evaporator

unfortunately we can not get to the back of the fridge as it is built in. Is there another way to check the evaporator.

If it is the evaporator is it possible to simply buy and install another, or is special equipment required to refill the coolant?

If it is the evaporator and I can not install, do you have a range of costs that it should cost to have a professional do this work?

evaporator is inside the fridge at the back panel,to change it requires specialized tools and training as well as the new freon .
to have a look at the evaporator you need to remove all shelves inside ,lite cover ,then 3 screws and the rear panel inside the fridge comes off, youll see a coil that has frost on it thats the evaporator..if your uncomfortable doing that you may need a professional? but if its only partially frosted itll require a new evaporator most likely, sub zero makes those out of a new material now

I am comfortable doing this an will do so tonight. If the frost pattern is not equal then I understand that it will need a new professionally installed evaporator. What is estimated cost range?

If the frost pattern is even, where would you go next? Is there another alternative solution?

well that evaporator frosts up and the fan draws air across it and circulates it throughout the fridge so if the fan is running and the coil is frosted then it should be working fine unless the control is cutting out prematurely before reaching temp? not very likely but not impossible
any other possibilities if the frost is even and the control keeps asking for more cooling or is not cutting out? Again, what is a price RANGE for a new evaporator installation. I am not asking for a quote, but would like to get a range of cost. What would be the approximate cost of the unit and about how long would it take to install? With that, I can apply the local labor cost. Thanks
no other possibilities that i can think of,sorry re: price our company would do that job for $500-$600 + taxes, parts and labour and freon all included
