we have a whirlpool ee3z80hd055v hot water heater in our weekend

Resolved Question:

we have a whirlpool ee3z80hd055v hot water heater in our weekend house.
on weekends we turn the heater to "smart heat" and during the week the heater is on the "vacation" setting.
The heater is about 2 years old.
We have well water.
This weekend the hot water had a residue that floated on the top of the water, the residue seemed oily.
There was no residue in the cold water.
Any ideas?

Hi thanks for the question.
The reason you have the residue with the hot water is because it is hot water and its not used and it is well water you wont get it with the cold.the hot water just sits in the tank and the minerals from the well water react with the hot water.

We have had this system operating in this manner for 2 years and this is the first instance of the residue. Why would it not have happened before.

What do we do to correct it?

what happens you get a bulld up of residue from the minerals at the bottom of the water tank. thats what happens when the tank is not used often.your best bet is to turn off the tank when your not using the house.
