My Maytag Performa washer PAVT920AWW has a screeching noise during the agiataion cycle only. I checked the belt, but it looks ok. When I turn the belt one way it makes no sound, but when I turn the belt the other way a similar screeching sound comes from around the agitator pulley area, not the pump area. Any ideas?

and this does not make noise in spin?
No, The screeching/squealing noise only happens during the agitation cycle.
lets make sure there isnt somthing under the agit ,, remove the dispenser off the top and take the screw loose inside the agit and pull it up off the shaft and let me know please
I don't have an extension long enough to reach the bolt to pull the agitator off.
can you turn the agit by hand back and forth
Yes and there is a slight low pitched squeaking when I turn the agitator each direction.
ok ,,, when you get a extenson to remove the agit and if nothing is under it to make this noise then i hate to tell you but it will be the transmission that will be the problem and you will have to tear down the washer to replace it, the upper bearing and the seals
So if the transmission is the problem then it may be best to replace the washer itself it due to the cost and amount of work involved?
yes .. hate to say it but replacing the washer would be the best bet ,, it will cost between $500 and $700 to have it repaired and you can buy a washer for that price and it will come with a warranty
Strange thing is that it still washes fine(at least, the clothes seem to come out clean). It just the noise drives my family and I crazy sometimes because it's so loud. Thank you for all of your help, I really appreciate it! Have a good weekend!
its a shame to dump one just because the noise but sometime that is the only way out ,,, lets hope you find something under the agit in the tub ,,, you have a goo evening too
