My GE refrigerator is not staying cold in the food compartment, and it is building up some frost in the freezer compartment. I swept some dust out from underneath on the black coils, and got the ice out of the freezer. But the ice is coming back. It is 10 years old, model TBXKI8K0 (I think) B. (That next-to-last digit is about worn off.) So, why do you think it is not working correctly? Thank you.
You have a problem with the defrost system. One of the parts has failed.
OK. how do I determine which part has failed?
Do you have a ohms tester?
That's something my husband might have, but I don't know at the moment. If we have one, how is it used on the refrigerator? Thank you.
You remove the inside wall of the freezer where the ice is.Then there are the heating elements.test them for continuity. If they fail the test replace them.If they pass test the defrost thermastat. It is located at the top of the coils. It is shaped like a little barrel with 2 wires coming out of it.It needs to be cold to have continuity. The problem usualy is the heater or the defrost thermastat.
OK, I have the back off, and there is a lot of ice coating everything. (I have the fridge unplugged by the way). I think I see the parts you mention. If we have the ohms tester, we will test these parts. It's something my husband probably has. This has been very helpful, and I thank you.
You are welcome.Just remember the defrost thermastat has to be cold to have continuity.
