Our refriderator is making a high pitch noise when the compresser is running. The fan is working well, I took the grill off the front and can feel the cool air coming out. This refridgerator is about 12 years old. We had a really hot stretch which is very unusual for our area and I've heard that lots of people are having problems with their refridgerators since then. Is it worth getting a tech out to fix it or is the repair so costly that buying a new one is our best option? Also, do they ever just stop making noises and work for a few more years? I don't want it to stop working and lose all the food in there. What do you recommend? Thanks, Mary
Hello.
Before you determine that it is the compressor making the noise try this. Unplug the fridge. Take something sturdy and block the blade on the fan motor that cools the compressor and coils. If it has been 3 minutes, plug the fridge back in. The fan will not be turning and any squealing noise coming from that area will be the compressor. The cost of the repair will be high and you may want to consider replacing the unit. If the noise is gone, remove the blockage from the the fan and see if it starts squealing. If so, replace this fan. The fan is not very costly and it will get you refrigerator running good again.

THis is my 3rd try to reply to you! We did the test you suggested and unfortunately it's the compressor that is making the noise. What I need to know now is how urgent it is that we replace it. When they start making such noises is it time to shop or time to wait until it just quits working? Is there a chance it will leak water and ruin our hardwood floors if it breaks when we're not home? Is there a chance it could work for a few more years? Thanks for answering this part of my question and then I'll gladly accept and you'll get paid. Thanks for saving us a service call. Will I need to pay another $25 if you reply to this second part of my question? Are you there? Mary40044.2191590625
Hello Mary.
Sorry. For some reason the replies did not post(I only have the 1st question, my answer and your reply). You could use this unit for another 5 to 10 years with the noise but you will have to be extra wary of the temp of the freezer and fridge. As soon as you see any failure it is time to act. I am glad I helped you out and hope that it lasts for a long time the way it is. No need to pay another time for this. Have a good night!
