Dear Tappan Technician, we have a Montgomery Ward Tappan range purchased new about twenty years ago. It has operated with no problems until this afternoon,, when the left-hand ignition started spontaneously to make a click-click soundl no one touched the range at all. We lifted the top and notice that both the left-hand and right-hand igniters were sparking but the sound only came from the left ignition. We unplugged the range, and both the sound and the sparks ceased. Would it be safe to operate the oven tonight? Is there a potential safety problem involved? Thanks very much for any information you can give us. Larry Okamura
if your getting a clicking sound then it thinks that one of your knobs is turned on. Often times after people clean the appliance, water will get into the burner switch and cause them to short out slightly. It's best to let it try and air dry as long as possible unplugged. Then if you plug it back in and it keeps clicking you will need to replace the burner switches. Otherwise you should be good to go.if it keeps clicking there isn't any harm you can still use the oven and the burners, but it will be quite an annoying sound until it is fixed.
