I have a whirlaway disposer model 284c. The motor just hums. I have pushed the reset botton on the side and it makes no difference. I have removed it and tried to clear any jam, but found nothing. These models do not have the ability to put a wrench in it to spin the drive or blades so I"m not sure what do at this point. I do I know for sure that I need a new one?
Hello and thanks for your question. Generally what you describe will be caused by something jamming the cutter. It will often be a "twist tie" or a metal pull tab etc. It sounds like you alread have but shine a flashlight in and look around the edge to see if you can find the offending intruder. It can be just down and out of sight. If so you can try the broom handle trick to see if you can get the chopper plate to free again. One or two at a time can help if you wedge and turn. Try to get it to turn either way. If this does not work it is seldom worth a service call to have one repaired as it can cost almost the price or more than that of a new unit. I hope you are successful. Please ask if you have questions. Dave
