The tensioner ring on the gasket on my front-loading Whirlpool washer came loose and now the gasket is loose. I do not know how to re-install it or where the ring is supposed to be placed.

Are you talking item 14 in the diagram? the one with a spring attached to the item?+++
That's it!
Any idea how it came off the washer?
Yes...one of my daughters put about 20 towels in the machine at one time...!
There is several ways to stretch the wire ring back on, I use 2 needle nose pliers and stretch the spring to make it hook back on, you need to make sure that you have the boot seated into the ring before attempting this, it takes me 3 or 4 tries to even suceed, and I install a lot of these each week...

I still don't understand where on the gasket the ring is supposed to sit.
the rubber boot is pressed into the front of the opening and that wire goes around it to hold it into the goove...
When I try to push the gasket into the groove (furthest from the door and closer to the drum, it keeps slipping out as I go around). Is that the "side" that the wire is installed, or is it on the side closest to the door? (I tend to be more "visual", so I'm having difficulty seeing how it all fits together).
If the rubber seal is seated in the front of the machine, there should be a groove present that you put the wire ring back into this groove..
Ok...I see the groove on the front of the gasket. So, once I reinstall the ring, the back of the gasket will "fit" also?
It should, however it may take several tries until you get it back on...
