Customer Question

I am building a two level barn in the Boston Area for storage of antique cars that will have 746 square feet on the ground floor and 374 square feet on the upper level. I am interested in an Amana Model AH183A35MA window Air Conditioner and Heat pump with electric heat backup and am considering one unit that would condition both levels which are open to each other.

The goal would be to keep the barn comfortable for the cars during most of the year, but allow the temperature to rise or fall when the unit was unable to keep up. In general no one would occupy the barn except for when I would be working on one of the cars, which I would not do if the AC/Heat pump could not produce a adequate enviroment. The ambient conditions might run from 25- 30 degrees F in the winter and 75-85 deg F in the summer. The barn will be well insulated.

What I need to know is what the current draw is likely to be at 30 deg F and 80 deg F to see what the kwh might be. Thank you Reese Dill

i just worked this out for cooling a building 20 x50 x 20 high requires 14K btu to drop 5* from 80 outside to 75 inside. Heating requires about 45% more. The current draw depends on the ac unit used and will not exceed the stated draw on the plate EXCEPT for start up which is 3X the run amps! That being said, if the run is 10 amps you need a minimum of 30 to start the compressor and I would add another 15% for good measure and make sure your electrician will run wire of adequate size to prevent voltage drop! Also HEAT PUMPS DO NOT WORK WELL BELOW 30* F so back up heat would be very advisable such as heat strips etc.

I was hoping to get the estimated current draws on the specific Amana unit at 30 deg F and 80 deg F. so I could estimate what it would cost me to leave the unit running during conditions that were between those temperatures. I would turn it off when it got colder and potentially if it got so hot that it would not keep up. The Amana unit is a window type unit that has 18K Btu Cooling capacity and 16K Btu heating capacity with an 1840 watt heating strip, and an energy efficiency rating of 9.

There are absolutly no charts to get the information you request. I can hazzard a guess, but the numbers will be very suspect. I can tell you the heat strip when on is about 13 to 14 amps draw at 110VAC and 7 amps at 220VAC. The compressor normal run will be 7 to 12 amps. Temp will not effect it as much as run time to heat or cool as far as cost.

Thank you

I was expecting to talk with a representative of Amana about the details of their specific model heat pump, I did not expect a general answer, but have accepted the payment of $24 to the reply that I got.

I would also use a couple 50 inch ceiling fans to keep air circulating

As I said, I was expecting to get a specific answer from an employee of Amana about a specific question not a general answer, but I authorized payment of $24 to the person who answered my questioin.

I do not want to continue more conversation at this point so quit bugging me.
