kitchenaid kssc42fms01. Fridge warm freezer not at its best.

Customer Question

kitchenaid kssc42fms01. Fridge warm freezer not at its best. Ice build up on coils no air blowing between the freezer and fridge. Fan above the coils working fine.

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
is it ice or frost on the coil behind the panel in the freezer?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
We've defrosted our unit for a week. As I remember it was mostly frost. I could brush off the condensation I found nothing solid.
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
is it cooling now
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Oh, ran the diagnostic test from panel board....#5 came up as a "2" as did nuber "7"...
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
how long have you had it running again
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
one more thing ,,, tell me if when it was frosted up was the fans, lights and control still working please
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
We had the fridge running today for about two hours...the coils were slightly dusted. The fan above the coils was was running. I'm speculating - baffle, thermistor or bi-metal defrost...maybe even the thermostat, or control board...Where do we start?
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
tell me if when it was frosted up was the fans, lights and control still working please
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
you still with me?
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
yup - this all new and trying to follow. Waiting for e-mails should I be on Website????
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
I'm at the computer and husband at the fridge...waiting
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
eather way ,,, what you need to do is replace the defrost heater and defrost bi-metal inside the freezer behind the panel on the coil ... the part numbers are ,,
heater ,,(NNN) NNN-NNNNbr />bi-metal ,,(NNN) NNN-NNNNbr />
here is a link to the parts and thanks and have a good day and if no other questions please hit the green accept button ,,, thanks again / larry

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
here is a picture to help you out ,,, the bi-metal is #1 and the heater is #17 ,,,, thanks again / larry

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
What about the thermistor...it would be the cheapest and easiest solution. Can you tell me what the calibration of ohms we should have on the thermistor & other questionable parts? Why do you think bi-metal and defrost heater? The defrost heater is measuring 19.5 ohms
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
the reason i say its the heater and bi-metal is because when it was frosted up and cutting down the air flow and yet everything else worked .. fan, lights and controls and the heater wasnt defrosting it out and if the termistor, fan or other parts wasnt working then you would have no air flow at all and yet the fan was working ,,, the main problem is the bi-metal but you always want to replace the heater when replacing the bi-metal ,,,, i have been into a lot of these and other makes and models and this unit you need to replace the two parts i gave you info on and it will fix it / thanks again
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Thank you for your expertise. Sorry but not totally satisfied. When running the diagnostics #5 & # XXXXX result in a "2" (fail). Number five is baffle motor and #7 I'm searching to find, is it damper open or closed???? I'm married to an EE and capable of testing power flow and dissifering whether or not the part has failed. Can youshare some info on the the pertinent power componets and the electical resistance? On research of this unit a lot is mentioned on thermistor. What roll does that play and how can we test both sides?
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
the thermistor allows the air baffel to open and close to allow air into the fridge and to cut down air flow when you turn the temp down but it dont have anything to do with the frodting problem plus at this point and it not been back on long then it will have errors that isnt right ,,, if it has been on a few days and errors started showing up then you could figure the errors would be right ,,,, at this point i would over look any errors you may see until the temp is back to normal ,,, it will sence the baffle is at fault right now because its not cold enought for the thermister to read
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

What about this, after defrosting our refrigerator earlier this week, we turned it back on for more than 24 hours. There was still no airflow from the freezer to the fridge. What else could it be?

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
that would most likely be the fan motor or air baffel not opening ,,,, was it good and cold in the freezer then and and the fan inside the freezer blowing
Expert: Randy replied 5 years ago.
That defrost heater Pt#2306388 can be checked if good or bad. Disconnect the defrost heater and check for continuity in the heater. That type of heater is nothing more than a rod, so if there is continuity then the heater is good. By your symptoms I would be looking at the air baffle/ damper assembly.
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

I checked the continuity on the defrost heater pt#(NNN) NNN-NNNN it read 19.5 ohms.

The fan above the evaporator coils seems to run good.

How do I determine if a have a baffle/damper assembly problem?

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
if the fan is blowing you can feel air inside the fridge then the baffel isnt opening
Expert: Randy replied 5 years ago.

Do you feel any air coming through the baffle?

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
thanks randy but i have this ,,,,,,,,,, sound like we have two problems ,,,, the frost probem that we were working on and now the air baffle ,,,, if its not getting air into the fridge now you need to replace the air baffel ,,, part number(NNN) NNN-NNNNbr />
ht tp://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/showPart.pd?partNumber=2221296&productGroupId=0046&supplierId=106&documentId=W0408058&pageId=00004&searchModelNumber=KSSC42FMS01&backToLink=Return%20to%20part%20list&subCompDesc=REFRIGERATOR%20LINER%20PARTS
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

The baffle 221296, which is at the top of the frig is open.

the baffle assembly(NNN) NNN-NNNN which is directly horizontal with the fan air tube, seems to have no airflow. Is air flow supposed to come out of that?

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
look at this picture and tell me by number which we are talking about ,,, sorry buy my mind is getting tired ,,, been a long day

Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Number 11 baffle assembly, is this where the cold air from teh freezer is supposed to enter the frig? There seems to be no cold air entering the frig.
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
ok and is the fan blowing as of now and do you feel air coming out of #17
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
The fan is blowing hard. # XXXXX baffle is wide open. No air coming thru # XXXXX But the fan and fan tube are down low and # XXXXX is up high so I woould not expect any cold air coming thru # XXXXX Plus we just turned our frig on so the freezer is not cold yet.
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
number 11 has the thermistor in the kit so if you replace the complete assy it should clear your errors ,,, would you like me to dig up the part number for you
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
i dug up the info of the baffle assy ,,, #11

Customer: replied 5 years ago.

Wow...great work ethic...very impressive -

Well, we left the fridge on over night. Frost on upper half of coils. Bottom of freezer is cold, top of freezer is not so cold. Fridge warm. First reading, after not being opened for more than 12 hours; temp reads - 38 freezer 58 fridge.

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
is the coil not completely covered in frost
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
not completely just the top half. We set a container on the bottom of the freezer and it's completely frozen. Some build up around the wires on the top. Fan above the coils is running great. Still can't feel any airflow...Should I try to run a diagnostic test?
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
no ,,, on the bottom half of the coil was the silver part showing or did it have a thin layer of frost on it
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
No I can see the coil. It is not covered with frost
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
well look like we were looking at the wrong thing to fix ,,,,, how old is your fridge ,, less than 5 years old
Customer: replied 5 years ago.

MFD reads 07/04 But we didn't begin using it until 1/05 So it's 4 yrs old

Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
you need to find your receipt for when you bought it and if it shows 5 years or less you can get the fridge fixed free of charge ,,,, you have a freon leak and thats why the fault readings ,,, you should have a thin layer of frost all over the coil and not just at the top ,,, this i'm sure of ,, i am a cfc/hvac tech and i work with freon ,,,, you will need to get a cfc tech to come out and hook up his gages and trace out the leak with his meters ,,, sorry for the bad news but this is what your looking at / larry
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
i have to leave and pick up my granddauther at school and will be gone a little while ,,, if no other questions then hit the accept buttom and when i get back if you have not i will know you still need my help / thanks again
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
i see you have not accepted yet ,,, if you still need help just let me know
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
if no other questions please hit the accept button to close this out / thanks
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Sorry, I had left a question regarding thermistor and baffle motor...
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
sorry but i never got the question
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
Sorry again - I'm being a stickler on thermistor, baffle motor, control board. Day two with the fridge on. Only the top half of the coils are frosted (more than yesterday) bottom looks normal, and the evaperator fan stops and goes (about every 3 seconds)
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
is the bottom of the coil frosted over now
Customer: replied 5 years ago.
No, just a slight whiteness across the bottom half. But it appears that the top is building up faster than the bottom. The fan is making 3 second turns together with the controlboard beeps. We have turned off the fridge. But prior we still could not feel airflow. Compressor is running we can hear it kick in. What could interfere with the exchange of airflow from the cold bottom half of the freezer into the top half of the freezer and the fridge?
Expert: Appliance Tech Larry replied 5 years ago.
the large amount of frost on top of the coil will interfere with the air flow ,,, sound like you have two problems as i have said ,,, the board controls the fan and the damper but the frost on the coil isnt right ,,, i left you a note about the frost problem ,,,, i would as i said replace the control board and see if it takes care of all the problems and if the frost problem keeps up then as i said you have a freon leak ,,, if there is a freon leak the coil will frost heavy on top and very little to non on bottom ,,, the frost problem may be what caused the board to act up ,,,,, i would get someone out with his gages and check the freon in the system before buying any parts .....

you may have a freon leak and thats why the fault readings ,,, you should have a thin layer of frost all over the coil and not just at the top ,,, this i'm sure of ,, i am a cfc/hvac tech and i work with freon ,,,, you will need to get a cfc tech to come out and hook up his gages and trace out the leak with his meters ,,, sorry for the bad news but this is what your looking at / larry
