My refrigerator compressor clunks when it shuts down

when the refrigerator makes a clunking noise on shut down that means that your piston inside the compressor has come loose. You will need a new compressor to fix this problem. I've seen compressors run like this for 10 years after the fact, others have failed after 2 or 3 but eventually the piston will become lodged or jammed and the compressor won't start again.
