This answer was rated:

My Maytag Neptune is 4-6 years old and is making a horrible, loud roaring sound when it spins. The sound is ear splitting and occasionally there is a grinding (metal on metal?) sound. It actually sound like it is about to fly apart in all directions. One load jcame out with dark spots all over it. Yesterday I noticed the plastic around the drum is shredding so I think it must be rubbing the door when it spins. Help!!!

Thank you for using Just Answer.

This sounds like it might be a dryer. Is this an dryer?

If it is a dryer, this happens when the rollers that the drum spins on go bad. They usually give a warning sign before it gets to this condition.

If it is a washer please let us know.

Please let us know what the model number is.

No, this is a washer. One of the first to come out. Model # XXXXX XXXXX

Repairing this will require you to disassemble the washer.

Go to: to see how it comes apart.

I would venture to say that you will find the struts are broken or unattached at this point.

Unfortunately, depending on what other damage was done you will be replacing other items as well to bring the unit back. Do not use the washer any further if you wish to repair as you will be doing much more damage each time you use it.
