My side by side Fridgidaire fridge with ice-maker, 3 yo, started making a noise that would last for about 30 seconds. The feezer quit working and then the refrigerator has stopped working all together.

If the noise You where hearing was a hum and then click and the hum goes away, You have one of 2 problems eitehr a bad start relay on the compressor or the compressor its self.
Most refrigerators carry a 5 year parts and labor warranty on the compressor and sealed system, changing the start relay can be considered tampering so I would suggest verifying Your warranty through Your owners manual and calling Frigidaire to send out a certified technician, or give Me the model number and I will check warranty and get back to You.
