We inherited a very large oil painting of a monkey climbing

Customer Question

We inherited a very large oil painting of a monkey climbing down what appears to be white drapery with foliage and an ornate vase in the background. Colors are very dark. The painting is framed in a very ornate gold leaf frame which is 8" wide all around. The entire framed painting measures 40" by 60". We know that the frame was purchased in Europe; we have the invoice for it. The artist is Jules Briand. We are looking to get an appraisal and sell, as the painting is too large to be displayed in our home.

Hello,

An original Jules Briand painting of this size and subject can carry an auction estimate of $2000 - $4000 on today's market.

Hi. My name is Doris.

When assessing an artist's work, appraisers must look at completed sales of works by the same artist. Art gallery sales prices are private.
We must then go to auction sales prices which are public. When using comparable work by the same artist, medium, subject matter and size are factors to be considered.
Appraisers most often use price per square inch of previously sold comparable works by the same artist as a measure of value.

Since the frame on yours is extraordinary, your framed painting would have an auction value of $5000-6000 as beautiful old gold leaf European frames can be quite costly.

If you wish to sell, these are my suggestions -

The internet has your widest pool of buyers. To sell close to retail try the following -

Try ads on sites such as

Or at auction-

A private seller to a dealer or at auction can expect 30-60% of retail value. With art, retail can be 4 to 5 times auction sales prices.
