Customer Question

I have a painting purchased by my parents approximately 20 years ago. They left no documentation. It is a very attractive painting in the abstract expressionist style, painted in acrylic paint on board. The subject is a mother and child. It's possible that there is an Indian tepee in the background. There is a clear "signature" on the painting but I can't find any record of an artist with that name. The "name" is DMATZ SHIMP. I've tried the on-line listings of artists with no result. What can I do?

Hello and welcome! My name is Doris.
I have been an antiques collector, dealer and appraiser for over 56 years.
I will be pleased to help you.
I have searched 5 major artist databases for Dmatz Shimp. The name does not appear in any of them.
I can find no major exhibitions in which his/her art has been displayed.
I cannot find any auction sales of work by this artist.
When this happens, the artist is viewed as an unlisted artist.
Often the artist is too young to have been recognized yet.
As you might guess, the prices for an unlisted artist's work is less.
I can value your painting as being by an unlisted artist if you can send me a photo and the dimensions of your painting, not including the frame.
To send photos you may use the "attach" or "add" link you see on your reply page.
