Customer Question

My Samsung Galaxy Note has suddenly started discharging at a rapid rate, just in the last couple of weeks, after years of reasonably reliable operation. The battery is OK and had been holding a good charge. No crashes like with a bad battery. Just lots of battery drain from Google play services. I turned off location services and sync, because there seemed to be a problem with sync not working for something called Picasa web albums which I don't use. Now I just sync when necessary. But still high drain...runs out in a few hours with almost no phone or web usage. Wi-Fi is off, bluetooth is off, Android version 4.0.4. Model SGH-i717R. Any ideas? Phone is almost useless like this.

Hi there and welcome

Can you please go on the device to Settings, Applications Manager.

Switch to the list ALL and locate Google Services Framework.

Press it and press Clear Data.

Then Google Play Services

Press it and press Clear Data.

Let this complete and when it has, restart the phone and tell me how the battery now operates please.

34;Delete app data? All this app's data will be deleted permanently. This includes all files, settings, accounts databases, etc."
This sounds like I will lose some important stuff. What am I likely to lose?

ok thanks

I followed your instructions and this morning the battery lost 40% in two hours with no usage. Google Play Services took 83% of that, screen 10%, and other OS functions took the rest.

ok, we will need to do a factory reset of the phone then.

First, backup any data from the phone off it as this will remove all data.

Then go to Settings, Backup and Reset

Then choose Factory Data Reset.

Once done, setup the phone again and tell me how it now functions please.

I have never had to do this with a phone so I will need some time to back it up properly. Can I back it up to the memory card I installed (16GB) or do I need to back it up to my PC?

best to do to PC
