This is usually an issue with the Firmware, so I would first like you to do this please.
Remove the charger from the Kindle and hold the power button to off for 35 seconds.
Release, then connect the charger and try to turn on the Kindle and use it.

On the Kindle go to Settings, Wifi and press on your wireless network and press forget.
Then remove the power to the Dlink and wait 5 minutes.
connect the power to the D-Link
then remove the charger from the Kindle and hold the power button to off for 35 seconds.
Release, then connect the charger and turn on the Kinde
Then go to Settings, Wifi and tap on your wireless network and connect to it.

your missing the steps before this...
The first step is

And you replied with messages that were very unclear about this step.
There is no point doing the additional steps until you have done this one, so please can you tell me if you have done this step or not?
you need to press on your wifi network in the list.
you will have to reset the Kindle.
This is going to wipe all data and return the Kindle to new, but once you set it up again your books will again be available.
To do this
Then setup the Kindle again and it should then function correctly
You will need to fins out the Amazon details used, it will be an email address and password.
If your Son set this up for you, can you please ask him what details he used for you please.
